ABOUT DME

The Department of Mechanical Engineering (DME) of CEG, being one of the oldest and renowned departments, was established in the year 1894. Embarking a remarkable history in its journey through the ages, the department takes pride of offering the first-born Mechanical Engineering degree course in India. The department offers exulting opportunities and triumphant learning for undergraduates in the field of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science & Engineering. The department offers flourishing post-graduate programmes in Internal Combustion Engines (ICE) (FT/PT), Thermal Engineering (with specialization in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning), Engineering Design, Energy Engineering, Manufacturing Systems and Management, Solar Engineering, Computer Aided Design (PT), and Product Design and Development (PT).

Ornamented with 62 faculties, 677 Under-Graduates, 216 Post-Graduates and more than 165 Research Scholars, the department feels privileged to inundate the students with excellent job offers and exciting career opportunities globally.

The department comprises of four (4) divisions namely Internal Combustion Engines, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning, Engineering Design, Central Workshop and two (2) institutes namely Institute for Energy Studies and AU-FRG institute for CAD/CAM. The department serves as a pioneer in various research areas. In Internal Combustion Engineering (ICE) division, research is undertaken in the areas of E-mobility, Alternate fuels, Computational Fluid Dynamics approach towards combustion problems and emission reductions. R&A/C division undertakes major fields of research in Heating, Ventilation, and Air-Conditioning (HVAC), and Alternate refrigerants etc.

The Engineering Design Division stipulates research in the domains of Mechanical Vibration, Tribology, and Composite Mechanics. The department endeavours consultancy in various fields for different organisations/industries.

The Central Workshop Division (1894), one of the oldest and largest divisions of Mechanical Engineering Department consist of Engineering Practices lab, Manufacturing technology Lab, Machine Shop, CAM lab, Metal Forming Lab, Heat Treatment Lab, Material Processing Lab, Composite Materials Lab, Mechatronics Lab, Robotics & Automation Lab, , Metrology and Measurement Lab in addition to Material Characterisation facilities like Optical Microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscope and U-V Spectrophotometer, DSC-TGA, FTIR, Dilatometer, etc…

Sophisticated Material Testing Facilities like Micro-Vickers Hardness Tester and Instron Tensile Testing Machine (50kN), Instron Servo Hydraulic Fatigue Machine (100kN) are available to cater the need of the researchers and the students. The Material Processing Lab has facilities for Friction Stir Welding, Friction Stir Processing, Hydraulic Press (100 Ton), Vacuum Hot Press, Hot Iso-static press, are also available at Central Workshop Division.

The AU-FRG Institute for CAD/CAM was established in the year 1996 under the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Anna University. It services to the needs of Indian Industries in CAD/CAM/CAE areas to enable them to become international business giants. This institute has software packages like ANSYS, MSC MASTRAN and ABAQUS. The AU-FRG ICC can handle any industrial projects related to new product design, product modelling, optimisation in product design, Mechanical & Thermal stress analysis, and NC code generation.

The PEOs of the B.E. Materials Science and Engineering programme are to make our graduates


► To prepare students to excel in research and to succeed in the areas of materials science and metallurgical engineering.

► To provide students with a solid foundation in mathematical, scientific, and engineering fundamentals required to solve materials science and metallurgical engineering problems.

► To train students to have sound knowledge on the production, processing, characterization, structural properties correlation, and application of all different engineering materials.

► To inculcate students with professional and ethical attitude, effective communication skills, teamwork skills, and multidisciplinary approach.

► To develop students with academic excellence, leadership qualities, leading to life-long learning for a successful professional career.

DIVISIONS

Central Workshop (CWS):

Central Workshop is the one of the oldest and largest workshops established in an academic institute during the year 1894. Central workshop encompasses 16 laboratories with state of the art facilities to cater the needs of undergraduate students of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Engineering, students of Post graduates & Research Scholars of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and allied disciplines. Over the past two decades, the Central Workshop has undergone infrastructural metamorphosis through various grants such as DST-FIST, PURSE, TEQIP etc...

Engineering Design (ED):

Engineering Design Division was started in the year 1972, to produce highly qualified and enthusiastic design professionals to prowess the economic growth of a nation through research and development. This division offers M.E., Engineering Design (FT) and M.E., Computer Aided Design (PT). The curriculum for the courses is well crafted to ensure the students to meet global and industrial standards. Internal Combustion Engineering (ICE):

Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (R & AC):

From its inception in the year 1964, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning division offers a P.G. programme, M.E. Thermal Engineering (with specialisation in Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning) with an objective of “producing post graduate engineers with strong professional ethics and sound knowledge who can contribute to the society using state of the art technology to make our nation a front liner in refrigeration, air-conditioning & allied technologies”. INSTITUTES

Institute for Energy Studies (IES):

Institute for Energy Studies was established as an autonomous research centre in the year 1999 by integrating 3 centres of excellence namely i) Centre for New & Renewable Sources of Energy, ii) Centre for Automobile Research & Training, and iii) Centre for Appropriate Technology considering the need for creating trained manpower for energy projects, ensuring energy security and environmental conservation. AU-FRG Institute for CAD/CAM (AU-FRG ICC):

AU-FRG was established in February 1996 with assistance from the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) a joint venture aimed at promoting CAD/CAM technologies in the Indian Industrial Sector.

The major objective of this pioneering institute at College of Engineering Campus is to provide all assistance to the industries and R&D organizations in enhancing their productivity and product design capabilities at optimal cost so as to assist them in becoming global players by the deployment of various CAD/CAM/CAE tools.
