Centre for Intellectual Property Rights and Trademarks was
established in Anna University in the year 2005 as per the approval of Syndicate of Anna
University at 170th meeting held on August 24th 2005. Subsequently,
the name of above Centre is changed to Centre for Intellectual Property Rights (CIPR) in the
year 2009.
CIPR was established to create awareness and offer assistance to academicians, researchers,
entrepreneurs and innovators to identify, protect and manage Intellectual Property Rights
(IPRs) effectively. CIPR actively involves in educating the importance of IPR for various
communities. CIPR has to its credit a well established Intellectual Property (IP) policy,
approved by Anna University Syndicate in the
189th meeting held on 17th July 2008.
CIPR is functioning as the nodal centre to assist
Industries, Small and Medium Entrepreneurs, Educational and Research Institutions for IPR
related matters.
CIPR has been recognised as Technology Innovation Support
Center (TISC) by the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), Ministry of
Commerce & Industry, Government of India.
CIPR has established the NRDC-Anna University- Innovation
Facilitation Centre sponsored by National Research Development Corporation (NRDC).
CIPR, Anna University recognises the importance of IPRs in
the form of Patents, Industrial Designs, Trademark, Copyrights, Geographical Indications,
etc.To enable the progress of this mission, CIPR receives innovations from various
departments namely Science, Engineering and Technology from both Anna University Personnel
including Research Scholars and Students as well as from Outsiders such as MSME’s, Startups,
Industries, Other Universities, Affiliated Colleges, Individuals, etc.
CIPR process the innovations by properly scrutinizing the
Invention Disclosure Form (IDF). Thereafter, CIPR is involved in conducting prior art
searches, drafting and filing of patent applications as per Indian Patent Act.
CIPR also files applications related to Trademarks, Copyrights and Industrial Designs
applications with in-house Patent Agent’s and Trademark Attorneys. CIPR also provides legal
assistance to the innovators in dealing with issues of infringement of their IP rights,
screening of patents and patent applications so as to oppose any granted patents.
CIPR also coordinates with various IP firms to conduct
programs to create awareness on Intellectual Property Rights and Certificate courses. CIPR
successfully conducted number of Certificate Courses on Intellectual Property Rights in
collaboration with Tamil Nadu Technology Development
and Promotion Center (TNTDPC) of Confederation of Indian Industries (CII), Chennai.
CIPR has achieved considerable progress in these
objectives. From the inception in 2005, CIPR has filed over 230 patent applications, of
these 35 patents have been granted as on September 2020. During this period, CIPR has also
filed up to 22 Industrial Design for innovations of grassroots and student innovators, of
which 11 are registered. CIPR team have also filed 23 trade mark applications,
of which 12 are registered and 87 copyright applications of which 54 have been registered.
CIPR also files Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT)
applications (International Filing of Patents) for outside innovators at an affordable
cost.
CIPR assists in filing of various IPR's to Anna University Personnel and Others.
CIPR has expertise and experienced professionals to carry out patent searches (both from free and paid databases), patent specification drafting, patent filings and related works.
CIPR carries out design patent search and filing of design patents applications for shape, configuration, pattern, composition of lines, colours applied to any products.
CIPR carries out trademark search and filing trademark applications for logo, symbol, design, image, sound, colour, slogan, smell, word, phrase or combination of these elements.
CIPR assists in copyright filing related to the original work of literary (books, lab manuals, etc), artistic (painting, sculptures, photographs, etc), dramatic, musical work, cinematographic films, sound recording, software programme, etc.
The CIPR regularly conducts awareness programs to educate the importance of IPR for faculty, students, research scholars, R&D institutions, SMEs, large establishments, etc
