UGC Sensitation Workshop under “Capacity Building for Women Manager in Higher Education:

The University Grants Commission and its National Consultative Committee for “Capacity Building of Women Managers in Higher Education”, organized a Sensitization Workshop at Chennai as a Non-Residential programme during July 10th-14th 2006 with Prof.K.Hemalatha, Department of Mathematics, Anna University as Coordinator and Prof.M.Thavamani, Principal, Ethiraj College for Women, Chennai as Associate Coordinator, Senior level academicians at Chennai from IIT, Madras University and its affiliated colleges, Dr.MGR Medical University, The Tamil Nadu Dr.Ambedkar Law University, Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences attended the programme. The venue is Ethiraj College, Chennai. The Univeristy Grants Commission sanctioned Rs.1.00 lakh towards the conduct of the above workshop.

Centre for Empowerment for Women conducted a workshop on “Gender Sensitisation and Self Defence” for the NSS girl students of Anna University during 26th and 27th November 2006. Tmt.Latika Saran, Commissioner of Police inaugurated the workshop. Mrs.Vidya Shankar, Chairperson, Relief Foundation conducted the session on “Chaning Gender Roles and Tackling Issues”. Dr.T.Karnali, Professor, Extension Centre, Mother Therasa Women’s University handled the session on “Introduction to Gender Sensitisation” and Ms.B.S.Ajeetha, Advocate, High Court handled the session on “Accessing Legal support for Women’s Issues”. The Self Defence techniques were taught by Mr.GeorgeThomas Kurian, Self Defence Trainer, “Chiron/Vajra”. The expenditure in this regards was met from CPDE fund.

UGC has granted a sum of Rs.3,00,000/- for the conduct of the workshop on “Capacity Building of Women Managers in Higher Education” to Anna University. The programme is a residential one meant for middle level and senior women academicians from Arts and Science, Engineering, Law and Medical Colleges/Universities located in Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, North Arcot and Vellore Districts. It is proposed to conduct the programme during 1st week of August 2007. This is the third programme given to Anna University by UGC due to the continuous support extended by the Honourable Vice-Chancellor to the welfare of women.
