– Dr. S. Arulchelvan is the Director of Educational Multimedia Research Centre, Anna university, Chennai. He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Media Sciences, Anna University.
His strong industrial and academic background has at multiple junctures played a role in helping him direct the right efforts in the right direction. In addition to his Doctorate in Media Sciences, he has received three international fellowships – Erasmus+ International Credit Staff Mobility at the University of Edinburgh, Supported by European Commission; The Graciano Lopez Jaena Fellowship in Community Journalism by the University of Philippines;Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship funded by the Foundation of Science and Technology (FCT), MCTES Portugal at University of Aveiro.
Now he is a Rotary Peace Fellow @ Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand.
Dr. Arulchelvan specializes in a wide range of communication and development areas like journalism, news reporting, development communication, community media, educational media and technology. He has authored books and has published more than 50 articles in reputed journals that focus on journalism, communication, media and the youth, sanitation and hygiene and other development communication areas.He is also on the editorial board of many research journals.
In addition to teaching at the Department of Media Sciences, he is also the Curriculum Development Coordinator and has developed and written course material for various subjects. He has successfully guided fourteen Ph.D., scholars in earning their doctoral degrees. His services towards teaching were recognized when he was awarded The Best Young Educationalist (Media) by Education Today (a Tamil Educational Monthly) in 2008.
With the support of UNICEF, ICSSR – Government of India, Department of Rural Development, Government of Tamil Nadu and other agencies he completed more than ten major and minor research projects in the area of communication, media, development and journalism.
He has organized more than 30 seminars and Faculty Development Programmes (FDP) on various media topics like community development, child rights and media, youth and media, media and women literacy, media accountability and law, media literacy and continuing education, etc. for media students and faculty members.
He has been a resource person at many seminars and conferences including the IAMCR conferencec, UNICEF workshops, UNESCO world press freedom conferences, Wolrd Democracy Forum (European Union) and many universities and conferences.
Dr. Arulchelvan is an Advisory Committee Member and Programme Officer of the National Service Scheme (NSS) in Anna University. Leading his NSS Unit, Dr. Arulchelvan has conducted many outreach camps in villages in Tamil Nadu and has organized multiple medical camps and other community development activities as well.
He was the Director for Centre for Development of Tamil in Engineering and Technology, Anna University and Dean for the University College of Engineering, Villupuram.
