A task force meeting with several high technology industries resulted in the initiation of a novel undergraduate B.Tech. programme in Industrial Biotechnology at Centre for Biotechnology in the year 1992. The programme is supported by a large consortium of industries that have agreed to set up a corpus fund to take care of the running cost of the programme. The University Grants Commission has come forward to support this programme.
Limited seats are available for the candidates nominated by Industries. However, the industry should be the member of the Consortium of Biotechnology Industries of Anna University. The details of the sponsorship will be made available on written request to the Director with a self-addressed envelope by the interested sponsoring agency and not the individual applicant.
The duration of B.Tech. programme is 8 semesters, (four years) with core and elective courses taken during the first seven semesters. In the eighth semester the students carry out a research project under the guidance of a recognized faculty. A total of 20 core courses (108 credits), 11 electives (33 credits), 19 lab courses (44 credits) and an additional 9 credits for project work and industrial attachment training are required for completion of graduation.
In this programme, while constancy in essential areas of biology and engineering curriculum is maintained, considerable flexibility is built in through the electives offered in the study. The students are encouraged to select areas that fit his/her aptitude and interest, so that they are allowed to specialize in the area of choice as follows; genetic engineering, process development, computer application in bioprocess, design and development of materials and machines in the bioprocess.
