Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority

Geographic Location:
   This part of the coast extend from Kuppam at north to Uttandi at south, having the latitude longitude of 12 º52' 30'' - 13º 07'30''N and 80º 06' 45'' - 80º 14' 30''E. Golden beach, Crocodile Park, Muttukadu Boating club, Kovalam beach are all located in this stretch

Physiography:
   
The sandy beach with beach sands rises slightly higher in the stretch.

Geology:
   
The geological formations are beach sands at Quaternary and recent periods. Cuddalore sandstone of Mio- Pliocene age, shoals and sand stone of upper Gondwanas and Chornockites of Archaean era also occur.

Geomorphology:
   
The area is a vast coastal plain characterized by several strandlines, lagoon , mangroves, salt marsh, estuaries, creek , barred dunes, spits, beach terraces etc.

The different Coastal Regulation zone class of Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority coast and their area extent are represented in the Table.3.

Natural Resources:
 
Ground water occurs under water table conditions, the major water bearing formation being the coastal sands. In many places the water in the coastal areas is brackish in nature due to the presence of Buckingham canal running parallel to the coast. The linear but discontinuous zones of silica sands deposit occur at north of Mamallapuram.

Human Settlements:
   Chennai district comprises of Saidapet and Chengalpattu taluk. The total population of Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority is 38,41,396 out of this 19,86,278 are male, 18,55,118 are female and 27,52,341 are literates
