Importance of M.Tech - Ocean Technology

The two-year Master course in Ocean Technology addresses the engineering, environmental and socio-economic challenges of ocean and coastal management faced by the developed and developing countries. The complexities in the development and use of marine and coastal resources have led to the need for professionals with advanced knowledge and skills in engineering, technological and social sciences. The newly developed Master Programme adopts an interdisciplinary approach to integrate the engineering, science, and technology for graduates to study the interactions between atmosphere, land, and oceans to understand how people and environment are affected by changes in celestial bodies, changes in weather and climate and to respond earthquakes, tsunamis, and other hazards. This Programme also concentrates on the technologies for ocean exploration, such as deep-water risers, drilling, production of oil and gas, subsea pipelines etc.,

This postgraduate programme enables the graduates to apply mathematical and scientific principles for the design, development, and operational strategies of various infrastructures such as, port and harbours, offshore platforms and coastal defence structures like breakwaters, seawall, groynes, and artificial reefs. Students will be trained on various open-source numerical models and inhouse models, so that they can simulate the ocean waves, currents and hydrodynamics which helps to study the wave-structure interaction process and to design the control warning systems to function in marine environments.

The graduates get the hands-on exercises to assess the marine water quality parameters, to analyse the microplastics in marine sediments, and marine sediment characteristics through laboratory courses. Students will be trained in Remote Sensing and GIS technology through which they can prepare maps of shoreline evolution, disaster mitigation plan and carryout Marine Spatial Planning. This Programme will be very effective for the enhancement of knowledge in ocean technology to perform quality research in the institutes of international and national repute for strengthening the nation's science and technology by creating a new generation of ocean leaders.
