Professional Experience

The investigator is a chemical engineer turned biotechnologist specialized in fermentation of genetically manipulated systems in bacteria especially metabolic engineering. The investigator has a well structured industrial career spanning five years in three giant pharmaceutical companies. Earlier, he has worked in fermentation and purification of recombinant proteins in E. coli. Currently work is focussed on metabolic engineering for synthesis of green chemicals.
He is offering bioprocess engineering and metabolic engineering course for B.Tech and M.Tech , M.S and PhD students at Anna University. Further he is also involved in the Marie Curie International Research staff exchange program of the ‘Food Research Exchange Programme’ between India and Europe offered by the European Union for metabolic engineering work package. This project involves collaboration in teaching and research.

Research Interest

Currently his research group is focusing on heterologous and synthetic pathway engineering by kinetic modeling and multiple gene assembly in hosts E. coli and Lactic acid bacteria. The group has pioneered engineering of acrylate pathway and the major thrust is in overcoming the bottlenecks associated with acrylate pathway leading to an array green chemicals such as propionic acid, beta alainine and other products. Further, work is also focused on developing redox balanced microbial chassis for acrylate pathway in Lactobacillus reuteri by utilizing glycerol as carbon source in milk whey medium. Products include green chemicals such as1,3-Propanediol, 3 Hydroxypropionic acid, 2-oxobutanoic acid, alpha amino butyric acid in E. coli /Lactococcus lactis. The focus is also on biopolymers, poly-3 Hydroxypropionic acid and poly hydroxyalkanoic acid. An exclusive fungal fermentation facility has been created for process optimization and currently work is in progress fro the development of technology for the production of cellulases in Trichoderma viride
